Cultural / Civic Organizations

California Surf Museum

This museum displays the history of surfboards and wave riding. Through its thirty-plus year history it now houses one of the biggest collection of surfing history. Volunteers serve as museum docents, assist curators in research for future exhibits, and help maintain the building and grounds.

The city’s Neighborhood Services Department needs volunteers to assist with tutoring, mentoring, and other programs at the three community resource centers: Chavez, Crown Heights, and Libby Lake, Spanish-speaking volunteers are particularly needed.

Volunteers are needed to assist with general clerical and receptionist duty at the main administration office, as well as recreation centers. Volunteer coaches are needed for youth sports leagues in flag football, indoor soccer, and basketball.

The Oceanside Police utilize volunteers in the Senior Volunteer Patrol Program, in which qualified seniors can assist in either an office setting or in unarmed uniform community patrols. Youth ages 16-20 can participate in the Police Explorer Program, in which they learn about careers in law enforcement and help out with traffic control and other community activities.

The library uses volunteers to help teach literacy, perform history research, deliver books to homebound residents, and provide general assistance to visitors. The Teen Partners program allows youth aged 14-18 to assist with children’s programs, including leading craft projects, helping children register, re-shelving books, and helping visitors find books.

Volunteers are needed at the Country Club and El Corazon senior centers to serve as front desk concierge, assist with events,, and provide other general help at the centers. In addition, drivers over the age of 18 years old are needed to assist seniors in getting to medical appointments, grocery shopping, pharmacy trips, and even to the hair dresser. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement for all trips as well as annual training and recognition.

Buena Vista Audobon

Chartered in 1951 as the coastal North San Diego County chapter of the National Audubon Society, the society runs a nature center on the shore of Buena Vista Lagoon. The center offers programs that help foster a knowledge and appreciation for the plants and animals that make up the natural ecosystem of our community. Volunteers serve as docents, lead nature hikes, help prepare and mail the newsletter, and more.

Assistance League of North Coast

Chartered by the National Assistance League in 1992, this organization  is dedicated to serving the needs, primarily of children, in the communities of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista, with the goal of providing a positive starting point for academic success. The local League operates a thrift store at 1830 Oceanside Boulevard. Call for hours as they change according to the latest public health orders. Volunteers assist in all aspects of the League’s operation.
